The operating instructions for life that you were handed at a young age probably go something like this:

Work for it, sometimes tirelessly and with great sacrifice.
Achieve it.
Celebrate, humbly.
We’ve been trained that once we achieve this thing, we’ll be rewarded, and we can splurge, celebrate, or set our sights higher. But oftentimes, the steps are more convoluted, and the end result is not always a direct reflection of our efforts.
